Secret Santa Generator — how it works and why it’s better than drawing from a hat

Drawing names from a hat sounds simple until someone pulls their own name and you have to start over, or two people accidentally see each other’s slips, or the person running the draw is not in the room when it happens. This generator removes all of that. Enter everyone’s name, click Generate, and you get pairings instantly — guaranteed that no one is assigned to themselves, every person gives to exactly one person, and every person receives from exactly one person.

The math behind it is called the Sattolo algorithm — a specific shuffle that produces a derangement, meaning a permutation where no element appears in its original position. In plain terms: John will never be assigned to John, ever, regardless of how many times you run it. A regular random shuffle can produce self-assignments by chance; the Sattolo algorithm makes that mathematically impossible.

Getting the assignments to people without spoiling the secret

This is the part that trips people up. Once you have the pairings, you need each person to see only their own assignment — not the full list. The Download button exports a text file with all pairings that you can open and copy from. The most common approach: open the file, then paste each person’s line into an individual email or message to them. Takes about five minutes for a group of 20.

For remote teams, some organizers screenshot each pairing individually and send them via Slack DMs. For family groups, WhatsApp individual messages work well. The key is that you — the organizer — are the only one who sees the full list.

Office parties, family exchanges, classroom events

Office teams tend to be the biggest users. The generator handles any size — a team of 5 or a department of 200 — and takes the awkwardness out of organizing the draw when you have a mix of seniority levels in the group. Nobody can complain the draw was rigged if it was done by an algorithm.
