The Letter Wheel is a free, interactive alphabet tool for early learners, parents, and teachers. Built around a colourful 26-segment canvas wheel, it makes alphabet learning engaging and active. Rather than reading a static chart, children spin the wheel and feel involved in choosing their letter — which research suggests boosts attention and retention in young learners.
Each of the 26 letters is paired with a set of familiar vocabulary words, chosen to be high-frequency and easy for young children to recognise. Emoji pictures make the word–object connection instantly clear, even for pre-readers. The built-in Web Speech API audio provides accurate pronunciation at the click of a button, removing the pressure on teachers to model every sound themselves.

Letter of the Day: Start each lesson by spinning for the day's featured letter. Write it on the board in both upper and lower case, use the vocabulary cards as a word bank, and challenge the class to find the letter in books around the room.
A–Z Sequence Mode: Switch to A→Z mode to work systematically through the alphabet over 26 days. Perfect for Reception and Year 1 phonics programmes following a weekly letter plan.

The Letter Wheel is designed to complement the major UK and international phonics frameworks used in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 classrooms. Whether you follow a structured daily phonics lesson or a more flexible approach to early literacy, the wheel adapts to your teaching style.
The UK government's Letters and Sounds programme introduces phonemes in six phases. The Letter Wheel covers all the single-letter graphemes from Phase 2 through Phase 5. Use it to reinforce the phoneme of the week and extend vocabulary with the on-screen word cards.
Ruth Miskin's Read Write Inc. (RWI) programme builds reading fluency through pure sounds and mnemonics. Every letter of the English alphabet is either a vowel or a consonant. Understanding the difference is one of the first and most important phonics skills children learn. Use the Letter Type toggle above the wheel to practise vowels and consonants separately.
Vowels are open sounds made without blocking the airflow. Every English syllable must contain at least one vowel. The five vowels are:

Consonants are sounds made by partially blocking or redirecting airflow. They work with vowels to form syllables and words. The 21 consonants are:

Combine with Sequence mode to step through vowels A → E → I → O → U in order, or through consonants in alphabetical order. Every result card shows a coloured badge — 🔵 Vowel or 🟠 Consonant — so learners immediately see which type they landed on.
Set the wheel to Vowels mode and ask students to say a word containing that vowel sound, then write it on a whiteboard. In Consonants mode, challenge children to name three words that start with the consonant they spin. Use Sequence mode with Vowels to sing the vowels in order (A, E, I, O, U) as a chant — a classic early-years phonics technique. Combine with Kids Mode for larger, picture-supported letters on classroom projectors.
